Las cigarras masculinas infectadas por un hongo parásito particularmente horrible se convierten en zombis con una misión encubierta: transmiten el mensaje sexy de una hembra a otras cigarras masculinas, atrayendo a sus víctimas desprevenidas a unirse a la horda de cigarras zombis.
Los investigadores descubrieron recientemente este giro inusual a la ya horrible historia de zombificación de la cigarra. A medida que el hongo parásito llamado Massospora se come el abdomen de una cigarra, reemplazándolo con una masa de esporas amarillas, el hongo también obliga a los machos a mover sus alas en movimientos que típicamente realizan las hembras para atraer parejas.

Una vez que las cigarras emergen y mudan sus exoesqueletos, disfrutan de unas pocas semanas de vida en la superficie como adultos, apareándose y poniendo huevos antes de morir.
Sin embargo, para las cigarras infectadas por Massospora, la vida da un giro feo. Aproximadamente una semana después de la infección, las esporas de hongos devoran el abdomen de la cigarra y su cuerpo se desintegra, pero el insecto no muere. Más bien, continúa volando y dispersando las esporas zombificadoras en un proceso conocido como transmisión activa del huésped, en el que un parásito manipula a su huésped vivo.
Al menos algunas de las señales químicas responsables del comportamiento antinatural de las cigarras son psicoactivas; Uno de estos es la psilocibina, que también se encuentra en los hongos alucinógenos, Pero aunque los científicos han identificado algunos de los químicos en el hongo Massospora, los mecanismos de las esporas para controlar a su huésped de cigarras aún no se han explicado.
