This iconic photograph captures the gritty, neon-soaked raw energy of New York City's 42nd Street during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Once known as the "Deuce," this block was the epicenter of Manhattan's adult entertainment industry and vintage cinema culture.

The vivid storefront of Peep Land stands out with its distinct eye-catching logo, offering adult movies, private booths, and penny arcades. Right next to it, the marquee of the historic Liberty Theatre proudly promotes mainstream blockbuster films of the era like Superman and Clint Eastwood movies. This creates a fascinating contrast between popular culture and the edgy, underground subculture of old Times Square. It was a time when the streets were filled with unique characters, marquees lit up the night, and the area possessed a rebellious charm that defined the city’s identity.

The Location Today: Decades later, this exact stretch of West 42nd Street has been completely transformed through massive urban redevelopment projects launched in the 1990s. Today, the sketchy adult venues and peep shows are completely gone, replaced by a family-friendly tourist destination.

The space where Peep Land and old novelty shops stood was cleared out to make room for modern commercial use. Today, this spot is occupied by popular attractions like Madame Tussauds New York and Ripley's Believe It or Not!.

The historic theater closed as a movie house in the late 1980s. However, instead of being torn down, its beautiful early-20th-century facade was preserved and built directly into the modern entertainment and retail complex. It is leased by the New 42 organization and has been used as a versatile event space.

The visual pollution and raw, unfiltered grit seen in the photo have faded into history, replaced by corporate flagship stores, massive digital billboards, and millions of tourists visiting an entirely modernized Times Square.

On the right side: You will see the large sign and main entrance of Madame Tussauds New York. This is exactly where the Liberty Theatre and the old Superman movie marquee used to be. If you look up high, you can still see the historic curved arch of the old theater built into the modern building.

On the left side: Right next to Madame Tussauds is a modern glass building. That is the exact spot where Peep Land and its famous eye logo once stood.
