¿Tienes un recuerdo de verano sobre las luciérnagas? Tengo muchos, habiendo crecido junto a un humedal. Sabía que finalmente era verano cuando estaría afuera jugando después de la cena y aparecieron esas pequeñas luces voladoras. Me imaginaba que cada luz era un hada con un largo cabello rubio en ese momento.

Pero como las abejas, los anfibios y las mariposas, las luciérnagas están desapareciendo. Si bien no se conoce la razón exacta, se sospechan tres factores principales: pérdida de hábitat, productos químicos tóxicos (que tienden a persistir en entornos acuáticos donde las luciérnagas comienzan sus vidas) y la contaminación lumínica.

La mayoría de las especies de luciérnagas prosperan como larvas en madera podrida y basura forestal en los márgenes de los estanques y arroyos. Y a medida que crecen, se quedan más o menos donde nacieron. Algunas especies son más acuáticas que otras, y se encuentran algunas en áreas más áridas, pero la mayoría se encuentran en campos, bosques y pantanos. Su ambiente de elección es el agua cálida húmeda y cercana a algún tipo de estanques, arroyos y ríos, o incluso depresiones poco profundas que retienen el agua por más tiempo que el suelo circundante.

A medida que la población humana continúa creciendo, se desarrollará más y más hábitat salvaje para nuestro uso. Mientras sigamos interrumpiendo las tierras forestales con casas, convirtiendo los prados en césped y pavimentando los humedales, habrá menos luciérnagas, a menos que comencemos a vivir de maneras radicalmente diferentes.

La otra parte del problema es la contaminación lumínica.

Tanto las luciérnagas hembras como los machos usan sus luces brillantes para comunicarse entre sí, encontrar parejas, mantener alejados a los intrusos y establecer territorio. Dependiendo de la especie, esos mensajes llamativos se coordinan, a menudo a través de grandes grupos de miles de errores. La investigación ha demostrado que las luces, tanto estacionarias, como las farolas o las luces de una casa, como las temporales, como las luces de los automóviles, dificultan la comunicación de las luciérnagas. Si mamá y papá luciérnaga no pueden encontrarse para aparearse porque son arrojadas por los faros de los automóviles, las luciérnagas jóvenes nunca se crean.
