Un caparazón de tortuga de 8 millones de años descubierto en Venezuela mide casi 8 pies (2,4 metros) de largo, lo que lo convierte en el caparazón de tortuga completo más grande conocido por la ciencia, informó un nuevo estudio.

Este caparazón pertenecía a una bestia extinta llamada Stupendemys Geographicus, que vivió en el norte de América del Sur durante la época del Mioceno, que duró de 12 millones a 5 millones de años.

S. Geographicus pesaba aproximadamente 2.500 libras. (1.145 kilogramos), casi 100 veces el tamaño de su pariente vivo más cercano, la tortuga del río Amazonas (Peltocephalus dumerilianus), y el doble del tamaño de la tortuga viva más grande, la tortuga laúd (Dermochelys coriacea), escribieron los investigadores en el estudio.
