Hace unos 70 millones de años, cuando los dinosaurios deambulaban por la Tierra, una anomalía genética permitió que algunas plantas se convirtieran en comedores de carne. Esto se hizo en parte, con un truco sigiloso: reutilizar genes destinados a sus raíces y hojas y usarlos en su lugar para atrapar presas.

Este paso es uno de los tres que algunas plantas no carnívoras tomaron decenas de millones de años para permitirles convertirse en carnívoros hambrientos.

El cambio de comer carne le dio a estas plantas una serie de ventajas. En efecto, las plantas carnívoras han cambiado la situación al capturar y consumir presas animales ricas en nutrientes, lo que les permite prosperar en suelos pobres en nutrientes.

Para investigar cómo evolucionaron las plantas carnívoras, un equipo internacional de botánicos y biólogos dirigido por Jörg Schultz, profesor asociado de la Universidad de Würzburg, Alemania, comparó los genomas y la anatomía de tres plantas modernas que comen carne

Hay cientos de especies de plantas carnívoras, pero los investigadores decidieron observar tres plantas relacionadas con el consumo de insectos, todos miembros de la familia Droseraceae. Las tres plantas usan movimiento para capturar presas.

Una planta es la conocida Venus atrapamoscas (Dionaea muscipula), nativa de los humedales de las Carolinas que ha influido en los personajes Pokémon, hizo apariciones en varios dibujos animados de los sábados por la mañana e incluso inspiró una obra de Broadway. La planta de noria acuática estrechamente relacionada (Aldrovanda vesiculosa) ocupa las aguas de casi todos los continentes. Tiene flaps flacos bajo el agua que se aprietan rápidamente alrededor de animales marinos desprevenidos. La tercera planta investigada, la hermosa pero mortal planta de rocío de sol (Drosera spatulata), es común en Australia. Atrayendo a las víctimas con dulzura, el rocío del sol enrolla una tira adhesiva alrededor de su captura.

Después de analizar estas plantas, el equipo descubrió el proceso de tres pasos hacia la carnivoría. Primero, hace unos 70 millones de años, un ancestro no carnívoro temprano de los tres carnívoros vegetales modernos experimentó una duplicación del genoma completo, generando una segunda copia de todo su ADe eNe o genoma. Esta duplicación liberó una de las copias de los genes de hoja y raíz para diversificar, permitiéndoles cumplir otras funciones. Algunos genes foliares se convirtieron en genes para trampas, mientras que los procesos de nutrición y absorción carnívora fueron guiados por genes que de otro modo habrían servido a las raíces que buscan nutrición del suelo.

El segundo paso en su viaje al carnivorio ocurrió una vez que las plantas comenzaron a recibir nuevos nutrientes de las presas. En ese punto, las hojas y raíces tradicionales ya no eran tan necesarias. Muchos genes que no estaban involucrados en la nutrición carnívora comenzaron a desaparecer. Por ejemplo, las plántulas de plantas acuáticas de noria adquieren una protoraíz temprana, pero no se desarrolla a medida que maduran. Este es el único remanente de lo que alguna vez fue un sistema raíz. Como resultado de la pérdida de este gen y otros, las tres plantas observadas en este estudio son las plantas más pobres en genes que se han secuenciado hasta la fecha.
