This iconic photograph captures the vibrant, sun-drenched landscape of the Las Vegas Strip during its golden vintage era, around the late 1970s to 1980s. Standing proudly at the center of the frame is the majestic, onion-domed neon sign of the legendary Dunes Hotel and Casino.

Opened on May 23, 1955, as the tenth resort on the Strip, the Arabian Nights-themed property was a symbol of mid-century desert luxury and a playground for high-rollers and world-class entertainers. Framed by the sweeping Spring Mountains in the distance, the bustling street view features classic vintage sedans and the iconic green "Strip" transit bus cruising down the wide asphalt, evoking a deep sense of retro Americana.

In October 1993, decades of classic Vegas history dissolved into dust when the aging Dunes was demolished in a highly publicized, spectacular implosion to pave the way for the modern mega-resort era. Today, the exact footprint where the Dunes once stood is occupied by the world-famous luxury Bellagio Hotel & Casino.

Specifically, the iconic Bellagio Fountains and its massive 8-acre artificial lake now sit directly over the ground where the historic Dunes tower and its towering neon sign once welcomed travelers to Sin City.

In this rare slice of music history captured by photographer Robert Landau, the street comes alive with giant, hand-painted billboards advertising the Bee Gees' "Live / Here At Last" album amidst the height of the disco craze. Standing tall in the background is the iconic 9000 Sunset Boulevard tower, then home to the famous "Disco 9000" club and historic offices for rock royalty like Jim Morrison and The Doors.

This stretch of road was the true heartbeat of L.A. nightlife, lined with iconic spots like the original Filthy McNasty's (which later became the world-famous Viper Room), cozy diners, and neon-lit storefronts. While the overall layout remains the same, this famous stretch of the Sunset Strip has transformed completely over nearly 50 years:

— Modern Billboard Displays: The rustic, hand-painted artwork of the 1970s is long gone. It has been replaced by bright, high-tech digital LED screens and modern advertising displays.

— The Storefronts: The legendary Filthy McNasty's nightclub on the corner eventually became the world-famous The Viper Room. Old-school diners and the ARCO gas station have made way for luxury hotels, trendy restaurants, and upscale shops.

— The Streetscape: The road is much busier now with modern cars, but the classic curving slope of the street heading toward Beverly Hills still looks exactly the same.
