POV: BACK TO 1982 — When Life Was Slower // 80s Synthwave Vaporwave VHS Nostalgia Mix
The video captures the vibrant atmosphere of Toronto in the early 1980s, taking viewers through some of the city’s busiest and most iconic downtown streets. The journey begins along Yonge Street, one of Toronto’s most bustling thoroughfares, featuring well-known landmarks such as Sam the Record Man with its rotating neon record signs, Toronto Eaton Centre, as well as stores like HMV and Hudson's Bay Company at the Yonge and Queen intersection. The famous “967-1111” phone number sign of Pizza Pizza is also prominently visible.
The video then moves through Queen Street West, passing by the CHUM-City Building, once home to major broadcasters like Citytv and MuchMusic. Nearby, a large mural inspired by The Division Bell by Pink Floyd can be seen on the HMV building.
As the route continues along Spadina Avenue and Dundas, the distinctive character of Chinatown emerges, with numerous storefront signs in Chinese and Vietnamese. Toward the end of the video, Toronto’s most recognizable landmark, the CN Tower, appears prominently from multiple angles as the vehicle approaches the waterfront and financial district. Throughout the footage, the city’s identity is further reinforced by the presence of red streetcars operated by the Toronto Transit Commission and vehicles bearing Ontario license plates, creating a vivid and authentic snapshot of Toronto during that era.
