Frozen in time, this photograph captures the vibrant, sun-drenched spirit of South Broadway in Downtown Los Angeles during the late 1970s, stepping right into the dawn of the 1980s. A nostalgic slice of Americana, the bustling corridor echoes with the hum of classic sedans and the visual poetry of historic storefronts.

To the left, the glowing marquee of the iconic Roxie Theatre (518 S. Broadway) proudly showcases its era as a prominent Spanish-language cinema. Towering over the avenue, the landmark neon signs of Hartfields and Reeds illuminate the streetscape, framing a lively urban tapestry of shoppers, vintage transit buses, and local businesses that defined the golden, energetic core of historic LA

Roxie Theatre (518 S. Broadway):
This was the only Art Deco-style theater — and also the last theater ever built along Broadway — completed in 1931. After permanently closing in the summer of 1989, the front lobby had its ticket booth removed and was converted into retail shops and clothing stalls serving the surrounding commercial district. The main auditorium inside still retains its original structure, but it has fallen into severe disrepair over the decades due to long-term abandonment.

F. and W. Grand Silver Store Building (553 S. Broadway):
The building with the prominent vertical red sign seen in the image was originally known as the F. and W. Grand Silver Store Building, constructed in 1931. After changing ownership multiple times and later operating as the Hartfield’s shopping center, the building was officially designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 2018. Today, its upper facade has been carefully restored to its original appearance, while the interior has been completely renovated into modern office spaces.

The entire area:
Broadway today no longer features the dense neon signage or classic vintage cars that once defined the district. Instead, it has become part of Los Angeles’ urban revitalization initiative known as “Bringing Back Broadway,” focusing on modern fashion retail stores, restaurants, pedestrian-friendly walkways, and updated public transportation systems.

This captivating photograph transports us back to the golden era of the Las Vegas Strip. Taken as part of a visual research project by visionary architects Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi—which later culminated in their groundbreaking 1972 book, Learning from Las Vegas—the image serves as a nostalgic time capsule of American roadside culture.

Looking north toward Sands Avenue, the frame captures the vibrant, chaotic beauty of the desert oasis before the age of mega-resorts. It shows a bustling multi-lane highway packed with classic vintage cars, framed by a dense canopy of oversized neon signs. Prominent landmarks of the time fill the right side of the view, including the Colonial House Motel, the Santa Anita Race Book (a mid-century off-track betting parlor), and the iconic Dirty Sally's Discotheque billboard.

The Specific Site: The stretch of the Strip pictured—specifically around 3207 South Las Vegas Boulevard (where the Santa Anita Race Book and Colonial House once stood just south of the old Desert Inn)—was completely cleared during major redevelopments in the late 1980s.

Today, this precise land is occupied by the ultra-luxury Wynn Las Vegas and Encore resort complexes. The small motels, low-rise businesses, and Emerson Avenue (the side street visible next to the signs) have all vanished. They have been replaced by towering, sleek glass hotel skyscrapers, manicured golf courses, waterfalls, and high-end luxury shopping plazas. While the neon glow remains a staple of Las Vegas, the intimate, retro "decorated sheds" of the 1970s have given way to massive, self-contained modern architectural spectacles.
