Los investigadores están tratando de descifrar los orígenes de las señales. Los detalles de sus hallazgos se publicaron recientemente en la revista arXiv mientras esperan una revisión completa por pares.

Si bien se han detectado señales de radio anteriores desde el espacio, esta es la primera vez que los científicos notan un patrón de ráfagas que se originan en una sola fuente.

El equipo detrás del descubrimiento cree que la señal se origina en una galaxia espiral masiva a más de medio billón de años luz de distancia de la Tierra.

Las explosiones fueron descubiertas por un equipo de científicos con la colaboración del Proyecto canadiense de mapeo de intensidad de hidrógeno / Proyecto de ráfaga de radio rápida entre el 16 de septiembre de 2019 y el 30 de octubre de 2019.

Los investigadores detectaron la señal cada 16.35 días. Durante cuatro días, habría una explosión cada dos horas, y luego se silenciaría durante 12 días.

La señal es una ráfaga de radio rápida conocida etiquetada FRB 180916.J0158 + 65. Los científicos detrás de la investigación esperan que el descubrimiento de su patrón de 16 días ayude a revelar más sobre la causa de las explosiones.

Una teoría temprana de otro grupo de investigadores que trabaja a partir de sus hallazgos postula que la señal proviene del movimiento orbital de una estrella u objeto compañero. De cualquier manera, probablemente no sean extraterrestres.
