¿Tienes un recuerdo de verano sobre las luciérnagas? Tengo muchos, habiendo crecido junto a un humedal. Sabía que finalmente era verano cuando estaría afuera jugando después de la cena y aparecieron esas pequeñas luces voladoras. Me imaginaba que cada luz era un hada con un largo cabello rubio en ese momento.
Pero como las abejas, los anfibios y las mariposas, las luciérnagas están desapareciendo. Si bien no se conoce la razón exacta, se sospechan tres factores principales: pérdida de hábitat, productos químicos tóxicos (que tienden a persistir en entornos acuáticos donde las luciérnagas comienzan sus vidas) y la contaminación lumínica.
La mayoría de las especies de luciérnagas prosperan como larvas en madera podrida y basura forestal en los márgenes de los estanques y arroyos. Y a medida que crecen, se quedan más o menos donde nacieron. Algunas especies son más acuáticas que otras, y se encuentran algunas en áreas más áridas, pero la mayoría se encuentran en campos, bosques y pantanos. Su ambiente de elección es el agua cálida húmeda y cercana a algún tipo de estanques, arroyos y ríos, o incluso depresiones poco profundas que retienen el agua por más tiempo que el suelo circundante.
