Recientemente, Científicos descubrieron bacterias que habían estado enterradas bajo el fondo del océano durante más de cien millones de años y aún estaban vivas. ¿Qué cambiaría si pudiéramos vivir tan solo un millón de años? Inmediatamente me vienen a la mente dos pensamientos. Primero, la permanencia en el mundo académico debería tener un límite. Las universidades tendrían que limitar los nombramientos de profesores a un siglo como máximo para refrescar su reserva de talentos y mitigar los dogmas de educación e investigación anticuados. En segundo lugar, un pastel de cumpleaños no puede contener un millón de velas. En cambio, la cantidad de velas de cumpleaños podría reflejar el logaritmo de nuestra época. Para una persona de mil años, eso significaría tres velas.

Las generaciones pasadas solían decir que aunque no podemos posponer la muerte natural, podemos controlar cómo vivimos. También creían que "no hay nada nuevo bajo el sol". Ambas declaraciones son inexactas desde nuestra perspectiva actual. Con los avances en biociencia y tecnología, uno puede imaginar un futuro posterior al COVID-19 cuando la mayoría de las enfermedades se curen y nuestra esperanza de vida aumente sustancialmente.

Si eso sucede, ¿cómo cambiarían nuestras metas y cómo moldearía esto nuestras vidas? Dado el lujo de perseguir planes a más largo plazo, podríamos realizar tareas más ambiciosas. Podríamos decidir preocuparnos más por nuestro entorno planetario y la cooperación interpersonal, ya que la contaminación y las hostilidades conllevan peligros a largo plazo. Una experiencia de vida prolongada podría hacernos más sabios y más reacios al riesgo, ya que hay mucho más en juego. No tendría mucho sentido enviar soldados jóvenes a guerras o iniciar guerras en primer lugar.

Pero incluso con estrategias astutas, la supervivencia no está garantizada de ninguna manera. Por ejemplo, la correlación conocida entre el tamaño del cerebro y el peso corporal no hizo que los dinosaurios fueran lo suficientemente inteligentes como para desviar el asteroide que los mató. Prof. Aditya K. Jagannatham (http://home.iitk.ac.in/~adityaj/) is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering department at IIT Kanpur, where he holds the Arun Kumar Chair Professorship, and is a well-known expert and trainer on 5G technologies. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, San Diego, U.S.A. From April '07 to May '09 he was employed as a senior wireless systems engineer at Qualcomm, San Diego, California, where he was a part of the Qualcomm CDMA technologies (QCT) division. His research interests are in the area of next generation wireless networks, with a special emphasis on various 5G technologies such as massive MIMO, mmWave MIMO, FBMC, NOMA, Full Duplex and others. His work has been published extensively in leading international IEEE journals and conferences, and has been recognized with several awards including the CAL(IT)2 fellowship at the University of California San Diego, Upendra Patel Achievement Award at Qualcomm, P.K. Kelkar Young Faculty Research Fellowship, Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship (QInF), Arun Kumar Chair and the IITK Excellence in Teaching Award.
