Una roca negra vidriosa encontrada dentro del cráneo carbonizado de una desafortunada víctima de la erupción del Vesubio resultó ser un cerebro humano vitrificado de 2.000 años de antigüedad,

El hallazgo notable es un testimonio de cuán rápida y devastadora fue la erupción. En el año 79 despuès de Cristo la ciudad de Herculano era una ciudad costera popular para los residentes ricos de Pompeya. Aunque la actividad sísmica alrededor de la montaña había aumentado, tales temblores no eran nada nuevo para quienes vivían a la sombra del Vesubio. Cuando los residentes fueron alertados de la erupción, ya era demasiado tarde. Herculano ardió en un río de lava fundida a 50 pies de profundidad.

Uno de los muchos hombres atrapados en este desastre fue el custodio del Colegio de los Augustales, centro del culto al emperador Augusto. Los arqueólogos descubrieron originalmente los restos carbonizados del hombre en la década de 1960, tumbados en su cama de madera. Había sido preservado en cenizas, como congelado en el tiempo. Sin embargo, no fue sino hasta 2018 que se abrió una grieta en el cráneo del hombre para revelar algo brillante en su interior.

"En octubre de 2018, pude ver estos restos y vi que algo brillaba en el cráneo destrozado", dijo a la AFP Pier Paolo Petrone, uno de los investigadores.

Era una roca negra, vidriosa como la obsidiana. Petrone no tardó mucho en comprender qué era este tesoro escondido: cerebro humano supercalentado y vitrificado.

Para transformar un cerebro humano en vidrio, el calor donde este hombre dormía debería haber aumentado muy rápidamente a unos 970 grados Fahrenheit. A esa temperatura, la grasa corporal se enciende y los tejidos blandos se vaporizan. Después de la intensa quemadura, habría tenido que enfriarse muy rápidamente para solidificar el cerebro en una forma rocosa.

"El alto calor literalmente fue capaz de quemar la grasa y los tejidos corporales de la víctima, haciendo que el cerebro se vitrifique", dijo el sitio arqueológico de Herculano en un comunicado.

Un análisis posterior confirmó que la roca contenía trozos de proteínas y ácidos grasos de un cerebro humano. El descubrimiento se aclama como "sensacional" e incluso podría ser posible extraer el A-De-eNe de este hombre.

"Si logramos recalentar el material, licuarlo, tal vez podríamos encontrar el A-De-eNe de este individuo", dijo Petrone a la AFP. "Ese será el próximo paso".

Herculano no era el único pueblo envuelto en lava y cenizas. La erupción del Vesubio pulverizó la ciudad romana de Pompeya, así como Oplontis y Stabiae, junto con muchos otros asentamientos más pequeños en el camino. Fue una de las erupciones volcánicas más mortíferas en la historia europea, liberando 100.000 veces la energía térmica de los bombardeos de Hiroshima-Nagasaki. Los restos de más de mil 500 personas se han encontrado solo en Pompeya y Herculano, aunque el recuento real de cuerpos probablemente fue mucho más allá de lo que los arqueólogos han descubierto.

He and 200 other people all gathered to physically lift by hand the brand new 75' sailing catamaran 'Ppalu' into the water from the beach where she was built in St Martin, Caribbean. She immediately became the fastest and most well known sailing yacht in the world, and also the biggest sailing catamaran at the time.

Able to achieve speeds in excess of 25knots, Ppalu's pedigree was true from the start, and she turned heads everywhere she went and bore the covers of many a magazine.

Tragically she had been very much neglected in her life as a day-charter boat in the British Virgin Islands over the past 20+ years, and was in dire need of tender love and care when Randy assumed command. He initiated "Project Ppalu" and immediately set to work on rebuilding her piece by piece over the course of the entire year. All the efforts were rewarded when she was finally re-launched in December 2013 and he and Joanne started out on their voyage of a lifetime.

Unfortunately, 3 months into their sailing, tragedy struck and 'Ppalu' was holed on a reef in St Martin and promptly sank. The video outlines the subsequent salvage operation and shows clearly what is now needed to re-restore this classic sailing vessel and let her heritage live on for future generations to see.
