Step back into the golden era of Neon Oasis. This rare vintage slide serves up major 1980s nostalgia, capturing the unmistakable energy of the Las Vegas Strip on a sun-drenched afternoon. Rolling down the asphalt is a classic Chevy Malibu, perfectly setting the stage for that timeless retro road trip vibe.
Right at the center stands the legendary Desert Inn Hotel and Casino, an iconic luxury resort that originally opened its doors in 1950. By the time this photo was taken, their famous pool-shaped sign had been partially covered by a massive attraction board announcing upcoming headliners. To the left, you can spot the towering classic neon of the Stardust Resort and Casino, while the Riviera’s Monte Carlo Tower peeks through the background under active construction. This is true mid-70s Americana frozen in time.
If you stand at this exact location today (3145 Las Vegas Blvd S), the view is entirely transformed. The intimate, low-rise Desert Inn and its sprawling golf course were demolished in the early 2000s. Rising in its place today are the massive, shimmering golden glass curved towers of the ultra-luxury Wynn Las Vegas and Encore megaresorts. The vintage charm of the 70s and 80s has paved the way for modern skyscraper opulence, but the spirit of classic Vegas lives on forever in these frames.
Today, the nostalgic 1970s/1980s skyline has completely transformed into a futuristic hub of megaresorts:
- Desert Inn (Center): Demolished in the early 2000s [3145 Las Vegas Blvd S today]. It has been replaced by the massive, curved golden-glass towers of the ultra-luxury Wynn and Encore Las Vegas [Wynn Las Vegas address].
- Stardust (Far Left): Imploded in 2007. The site is now home to the $4.3 billion Asian-themed megaresort, Resorts World Las Vegas, which opened in 2021.
- Riviera (Background): Imploded in 2016. The land has been cleared and repurposed into the massive Las Vegas Convention Center District expansion.
- The Strip (Roadway): The quiet, four-lane asphalt road is now a bustling 8-lane boulevard, packed with modern traffic and dominated by giant 24/7 digital LED screens.
