WHAT HAPPENED?
The Internet has turned our existence upside down. It has revolutionized communications, to the extent that it is now our preferred medium of everyday communication. In almost everything we do, we use the Internet. Ordering a pizza, buying a television, sharing a moment with a friend, sending a picture over instant messaging. Before the Internet, if you wanted to keep up with the news, you had to walk down to the newsstand when it opened in the morning and buy a local edition reporting what had happened the previous day. But today a click or two is enough to read your local paper and any news source from anywhere in the world, updated up to the minute.

The Internet itself has been transformed. In its early days—which from a historical perspective are still relatively recent—it was a static network designed to shuttle a small freight of bytes or a short message between two terminals; it was a repository of information where content was published and maintained only by expert coders. Today, however, immense quantities of information are uploaded and downloaded over this electronic leviathan, and the content is very much our own, for now we are all commentators, publishers, and creators.

In the 1980s and 1990s, the Internet widened in scope to encompass the IT capabilities of universities and research centers, and, later on, public entities, institutions, and private enterprises from around the world. The Internet underwent immense growth; it was no longer a state-controlled project, but the largest computer network in the world, comprising over 50,000 sub-networks, 4 million systems, and 70 million users.

Artificial Intelligence
Everybody is talking about Artificial Intelligence these days. And yes, in many cases, the topic is covered with exaggerations and hype. Fortunately, the overall A.I. progress and the pace of the underlying technological innovation easily justifies this hype. Consider the progress achieved in fields like Deep Learning and areas such as Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing.

Computer vision is making huge steps, with massive applications in autonomous cars, navigation, robotics, pattern recognition, medical diagnosis, and more. Language Understanding has made tremendous progress as well — recently reached the levels of human understanding — Microsoft reports a word error rate of 5.9% which is equal to human performance on the same input.

Digital assistants become more and more intelligent, contextual, and proactive. At some point in the near future, your digital assistant will be able not only to handle your tasks and information requests but also to do respond with humor — and this will be a major milestone for A.I.

Your digital assistant will know (and keep learning) the style of your humor and how it depends on the time of day, the day of the week, the social arrangement, the agenda of the day, and your implicitly quantified mood. Your digital assistant will be able to make decisions such as when to respond with humor when to proactively say something funny or trigger a humorous dialogue — while always capturing its success via your responses (or lack of). It’s coming and it will be fun.

Considering the general availability of advanced cognitive technology (cloud-based commercial AI offerings via easy-to-consume APIs) and the low-cost integration scenarios, the AI-powered opportunities for innovation increase exponentially — APIs and the cloud make it easy even for junior software developers to build cognitive apps, powered by advanced A.I. capabilities.

As a developer, you just need to browse the commercial offerings by the tech giants such as Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Facebook, and the like and choose from a wide range of cognitive services to encapsulate into your application. Or, you can explore the open-source options on reusing and adapting advanced analytical and cognitive models. In any case, developers can now experiment with cognitive services in no time and at a low cost.

But, one could argue that, given that A.I. is driven by huge investments of those few technology corporations, the opportunity for innovation is rather limited. When it comes to A.I. I believe that the real opportunity for innovation is the actual approach in solving particular problems and how the cognitive services are utilized and combined; how the developer provides the right data and signals to empower better, smarter user experiences.

Exponential tech advances will change the world faster than we think

We live in a world of exponentially increasing technological advancements. Never in the history of mankind have so many such advancements emerged in parallel and in combination, carrying so much impact.

The phenomena are marked in time: The timing from what once seemed impossible to possible and functional can become extremely short – sometimes measured in just days or weeks. Ever heard the maxim that internet years are like dog years, where one in actual elapsed time equates to seven? Exponential advancement is the reason.

Some exponential advancements are now so predictable, such as the rate of growth of computing power, that companies have baked in the expected advancements in their products. Similarly, it is fairly predictable that full genome sequencing today can be done for a few hundred dollars, as opposed to the thousands required in 2015, the millions in 2006, or the billions for the first full sequence in 2003. The speed of wireless communications will soon multiply by at least 10X, and deep learning will continue to exponentially advance in capability in the near future. And all of this is happening in concert. As a result, it has become harder and harder to develop new companies based on any of these advancements alone.
