Betelgeuse, que forma el hombro de la constelación de Orión, es una de las estrellas más famosas y familiares en el cielo nocturno, y una de las más extremas.
Betelgeuse es una "supergigante roja" 11 veces más masiva que nuestro sol y 900 veces más ancha. Si se transportara al centro de nuestro sistema solar, Betelgeuse engulliría a Mercurio, Venus, la Tierra, Marte y el cinturón de asteroides. (Eso sería un viaje de larga distancia para la supergigante roja, que se encuentra a unos 500 años luz de la Tierra).
