This iconic image shows East Speedway Boulevard (at Country Club Road) in Tucson, Arizona. It became the face of American urban sprawl after Life magazine famously branded it the "Ugliest Street in America" due to its chaotic visual clutter.

The photo is a masterpiece of "compression." Using a telephoto lens, the photographer stacked miles of neon signs, billboards (like the original eegee’s and Saxons), and classic cars into one dense, vibrant frame. It perfectly encapsulates the raw, unpolished energy American car culture—a jungle of commercialism under the bright Arizona sun.

Today, the "ugliest street" is gone. Following a $50 million transformation in the 1990s, the towering signs were removed and replaced by landscaped medians, wide sidewalks, and desert trees. Once a symbol of urban mess, it was later reclaimed as a "Street of the Year," turning this photograph into a rare, nostalgic window into a lost era of the Southwest.
